Snow: Deadman

T-Trench Anchors (aka Deadman)

  • Dig a 'grave' (hole) perpendicular to the fall line of the slope, about 2 feet deep
  • Clove hitch cord or sling to the anchor (skis, ice axe, picket, backpack, big rock, ski poles, etc)
  • Dig a small channel from the bottom of the grave, up and out gradually to the surface of the snow in the exact direction of pull
  • Backfill the hole if desired for added holding power

This anchor is a little slow to create, but had strong holding force.
